“A Girl from a Remote Area: From a Porter to the Owner of a Trekking Company.”

#The Rising Nepal 2026 january 6

Tourism entrepreneur Durga Laxmi Rawal has successfully created employment opportunities for young men and women in the tourism sector, rising from a porter to a guide. She says that it is the long journey of struggle that has enabled her to reach this position today. She was born in 2041 B.S. as the middle daughter of Top Bahadur Rawal and Lati Rawal. Her birthplace is Bhamwada village, Chhayanath Rara Municipality–4, Mugu District.

About two decades ago, in remote districts, it was uncommon to educate daughters, so she somehow managed to study up to grade three at the nearby Setiwada Primary School along with her brother. However, due to household responsibilities such as farming work, caring for livestock, and maintaining the home, the family environment forced her to discontinue her studies midway. To become self-reliant and develop her skills, in 2062 B.S. she completed a three-month training as a Mother and Child Health Worker at the Technical Institute in Jumla.
